- Complete,detailed and reliable historical earthquake data are the basis for studying seismicity.But in the Yunnan region,a great number of historical earthquakes were not recorded.So it is needed to probe historical earthquake records in Yunnan and perform textual researches for them conscientiously.Taking the Yunnan region as an example,we expound the importance,principles,and examples of textual research of historical earthquake data in this paper.We present that the historical records should be used cautiously,and the latest data that have been textually researched should be used. The principles suggested in this paper are effective for defining difficult historical earthquakes. Sometimes deep textual research is necessary because a bit of record probably give us the clue to a large earthquake event. It is important for the development of seismology to strengthen the basic research on historical earthquakes.
